He meant it. He has said it publicly, more than once. He has testified before Congress. He has called for regulation. He has named the risk — not as hyperbole, but as a genuine possibility.
And he is not wrong.
AI is powerful. It is the most powerful tool humanity has ever built. And power, without wisdom, is dangerous. Fire can warm a home or burn it down. The printing press can spread knowledge or propaganda. AI can cure disease — or it can surveil, manipulate, and concentrate power in ways we have never seen.
The risk is real.

The machine will not destroy the earth if enough humans remember they are not separate from the earth — and build technology from that remembering.
